Apple unveiled its long-awaited first foldable smartphone, the iPhone Duo, on Wednesday, at the company’s first launch event since CEO John Ternus took the reins on September 1.

Apple’s first foldable comes seven years after Samsung pioneered the category, but the American tech giant is expected to take a sizable chunk of the market.

“Others have created foldables that just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together,” Ternus said in a video shown at the Steve Jobs Theater at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Apple wanted a device with a large display “that feels as natural and intuitive as (the) iPad,” said the former head of Apple’s hardware division, who succeeded Tim Cook this month.

The format essentially combines the portability of a smartphone with the larger display of a tablet, offering users a bigger screen without carrying a tablet-sized device.

Roughly the size and shape of a passport when folded, the iPhone Duo is made with titanium and has a 7.6-inch (19-centimeter) internal display and a 5.4-inch (14-centimeter) external display.

It is available in two colors, “star white” and “night sky.”

The Duo will go on sale in 70 countries beginning October 23, the company said.

Apple touted the phone’s multiple cameras, including a front-facing external lens, two back-facing lenses and an internal lens. The lenses can be used simultaneously when the device is fully open.

The Duo is priced starting at $1,999, slightly more than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8, which starts at around $1,899.

Apple also announced a new monthly leasing program called Apple Upgrade, which lets customers pay off their purchase over one or two years.

Samsung launched the industry’s first mainstream foldable smartphone, the Galaxy Fold, in 2019.

Foldable smartphones make up a tiny fraction of the market, at less than 2 percent of global shipments, but Apple is expected to capture about a third of demand with its entry, according to research firm IDC.

“Apple’s foldable iPhone is very likely to shift the competitive dynamics both in China and global markets,” IDC research associate Kiranjeet Kaur told AFP.

According to government data, Nigeria has over 50,000 public primary schools with more than 23 million pupils. However, only slightly above 3 million transition into junior secondary school within the public system, leaving a significant number of children unaccounted for.


The minister questioned the gap, noting that private schools cannot absorb the remaining millions, pointing instead to a widespread lack of access to secondary education. He emphasized that state governments must prioritise building more schools to accommodate growing demand.


To strengthen oversight, the government plans to introduce a Learner Identification Number (LIN) for every child starting from primary school. This unique number will remain with each student throughout their academic journey, regardless of location or school changes.


The system is expected to help authorities track student progress and quickly identify cases where children drop out of school. For example, officials would be able to detect if a student expected to be in junior secondary school is no longer enrolled and investigate the reasons.


In addition, the government is working to revive the school feeding programme as part of efforts to boost enrolment and retention in public schools. There are also plans to move the programme under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Education to improve monitoring and effectiveness.

 to take Big Brother Naija (BBN) off the air over fears of a possible spread of COVID-19 among housemates.
 

 
 According to TheCable, Armstrong Idachaba, acting Director-General of the NBC, 
 told senior management members that he had been directed by the Minister of Information 
 and Culture, Lai Mohammed, to shut down the show.
 

 
 Insiders disclosed that the NBC management was not well disposed to the move, 
 with some members saying there was no strong basis for the decision.
 

 
 A director reportedly reminded the meeting that NBC had already sought explanations 
 from MultiChoice regarding a possible violation of COVID-19 protocols before the show began. 
 The letter was sent on July 1.
 

 
 MultiChoice responded with detailed explanations on safety measures taken in collaboration 
 with the Lagos State Government. The Lagos State Safety Commission had given approval 
 for the show to proceed.
 

 
 According to the response, housemates were screened prior to the show, and the BBN house 
 was decontaminated and restructured to ensure physical distancing. The use of a live audience 
 was also eliminated.
 

 
 All housemates reportedly underwent a mandatory two-week isolation period during which 
 any COVID-19 symptoms would have manifested if present.
 

 
 Another director stated that participants had maintained safety protocols, including 
 consistent use of hand sanitizers since the show began.
 

 
 Idachaba, who is reportedly seeking confirmation as the substantive Director-General, 
 was advised to request a written directive from the Minister. However, he reportedly

 lack of basic amenities and the daily struggles Nigerians face in accessing infrastructural benefits. 
 It also focuses on managing economic difficulties intensified by the COVID-19 lockdown.

 The outreach program recently visited Zhiko Community, a remote settlement 
 bordering Niger State and Saburi 1 Village in the FCT.
 

 
 Driven by the vision of creating hope, touching lives, educating people in remote areas, 
 and ensuring infrastructural intervention for underprivileged societies, the initiative 
 was co-founded by Mr. Benson Samuel and Vivian Oduah.
 

 
 During the visit, palliatives were distributed, including:
